The IMB is a product of the Sustainable Academic Capacity-Building for Excellence through Research and Training (SACERT) Programme, which originally encompassed 12 South African universities and other research institutions, including five historically disadvantaged institutions (HDIs). Cognizant of the limited access that South African researchers have to research resources, including funds to develop valid, reliable, contextually appropriate measures to utilize in mental health-related research, SACERT added a theory-guided Learning Collaborative (SACERT-LC) to address this gap. This integrated measures bank is one such intervention intended to contribute mainly to the capacity of historically disadvantaged institutions and more broadly, to the rigor, accessibility, and impact of mental health research in South Africa. The IMB is housed in an open access online platform at the University of Limpopo under the guidance of SAMRC-DSI/NRF-UL SARChI Chair in Mental Health and Society. The SACERT-IMB aligns with the Research Chair’s priority to conduct epidemiological and behavioural risk factor surveillance on mental illness and other conditions.
